Prince of Persia is a video game franchise created by Jordan Mechner, originally published by Broderbund, the company learned, and now Ubisoft. This franchise is based on a series of action adventure games focused on the various incarnations of the prince of the same name. The first game of the series was designed by Mechner after the success of their previous game by Broderbund, Karateka. The title is enough to spawn two sequels successful series has been rebooted twice since the acquisition by Ubisoft success, and has been successful enough to warrant a film adaptation, which was written in part by Mechner and released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2010.
Although Mechner has been involved with the series in different capacities throughout its history, the game itself has been developed and published by several different companies. Prince of Persia 3D, the first to use 3D computer graphics, developed by Red Orb Entertainment and published by The Learning Company PC, and developed by Avalanche Software and published by Mattel Interactive Sega Dreamcast. The French company Ubisoft video game based start to develop and publish the series in 2003 with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and so far has been the most productive of any company to bring a new game in the series.
The first game in the series, simply titled Prince of Persia, created by Jordan Mechner after the success of Karateka. From some common source of inspiration, including the Arabian Nights stories, and films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Adventures of Robin Hood, the protagonist character animation created using a technique called rotoscope with Mechner used as a model for his brother Prince holder. Despite the success of the game, Mechner registered in the department of Film at the University of New York, the production of a short film awards during his time there, before finally returning to Broderbund four years after making a sequel to the original game. Development of the third game in the series, Prince of Persia 3D, given to the Red Orb Entertainment, a former subsidiary of Broderbund, with Mechner new job as a writer and co-designer. The game was released in 1999, before the main error checking can be done, and it was a critical and commercial disappointment. Mechner, who owned the IP Persian prince, was taken to work with Ubisoft on the reboot of the franchise, eventually titled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, although initially worried after his experience with the two last Prince of Persia game. The Sands of Time is a success, despite suffering from lower sales than expected, leading the team in tow to re aesthetic formula slightly. Mechner was not involved in the production of the next game, Warrior, and he commented later in the search for dark atmosphere and the level of violence unappealing.The changes also sparked mixed reactions from critics, sales increased and the number of the third set, eventually titled The Two Thrones, enter to production.
